The Purple Regiment has received numerous awards for its musical abilities over the years beyond simply the Marching Band competition awards received in the Fall of each year. This page showcases just some of the awards garnered by the Purple Regiment over the past decade.
Northwestern High School is Recognized as a 2004 GRAMMY Signature High School

Just as the GRAMMY Award recognizes excellence in recording, GRAMMY Signature Schools honors top public high school music programs, as well as those that use creative means to successfully address challenging circumstances. All public high schools nationwide have the opportunity to apply for consideration as a GRAMMY Signature School.
The Application Process
Completed applications, which detail the scope of the schools’ music programs, are tabulated by an independent firm. Top scoring schools become finalists and are asked to submit audio and printed materials for review by a screening committee of music education professionals. The screening committee selects up to 50 music programs as GRAMMY Signature Schools. Of the schools chosen, a special “Blue Ribbon Committee” selects finalists to be recognized as GRAMMY Signature Schools “Gold”, “National”, and Enterprise Award Winners. Gold Schools receive a cash award of $5,000, the National school receives $25,000 and the new Enterprise Award provides $50,000 to a school, based on maintaining a quality program within an economically underserved neighborhood.

Northwestern High School wins 15th straight OPA Award!

Band Director Larry Wells announced that the Purple Regiment has won the South Carolina Outstanding Performance Award for a 15th consecutive year. The award is presented to those schools earning at least 90 out of the possible 100 points from Band activities (shown below) during the entire year.
Marching Band....30 points maximum (27 for excellent rating, 30 for superior; we received the maximum)
All-State/Region Band....20 points maximum...(we received the maximum)
Concert Festival.....30 points maximum...(we received the maximum)
Solo/Ensemble...20 points maximum...(we received the maximum)
